Could The Gamecube Go Out On Top?

It’s no secret. As much as we all love the Gamecube, the upcoming release of the Wii marks the beginning of the end for the Nintendo Gamecube. And while there have been many great games for the Gamecube, one would argue that it has not been one of Nintendo’s most successful consoles. Yet, there is apparently still a chance that the Gamecube could go out on a high note. Codename Revolution has an interesting article comparing the sales figures of the Gamecube with those of the original Xbox. Right now, it’s a close race — the Xbox has 22 millions units sold worldwide versus 21 million for the Gamecube and since the Xbox is being discontinued, the Gamecube has a shot to outsell it overall.

With the upcoming release of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Gamecube combined with Microsoft discontinuing the Xbox, the Gamecube will most likely surpass the Xbox in total units sold worldwide. It would definitely be a worthy finish for the Gamecube, arguably the best console of it’s generation.
