For everyone who thought that the GameCube was dead, check this out. According to Kotaku, from April through June 2008 Nintendo sold 40,000 new GameCubes in the US. 40,000!!! Considering that most people aren’t even aware of the fact that Nintendo still actually makes the GameCube, this is an amazing number. With all the publicity going to the Wii, I didn’t even think that anybody would even consider buying a GameCube.

I guess with the low price (only $92.99 for the platinum GameCube at Amazon) and all the great games available (Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime, Pikmin, etc.) it’s no wonder there are a lot of people still shopping for a GameCube. Given the price for the GameCube itself and all the great games, it’s a great value — not everybody needs to be on the cutting edge of videogame technology and have the latest generation consoles.

With the supply of new games for the Gamecube starting to run dry, ports of existing games to the Gamecube will become one of the few sources for some new Gamecube goodness. Of course, someone will have to port these games to the Gamecube, and Peter Mackay has done just that with the well known FPS Quake. Since the Quake license was changed to GPL and the source code became available, there have been numerous ports to many gaming devices including the Sony PSP (also ported by Peter Mackay) and now the Gamecube.

Getting Quake running on the Gamecube is not easy and definitely not for the faint of heart. To begin with, you’re going to need some additional hardware just to get Quake onto the Gamecube. A Datel SD Media Launcher is needed to be able to get the Quake program and data onto the Gamecube and actually launch the program. In addition to the Gamecube Quake program, you will also need the original shareware version of Quake which includes the data files needed to play the game on any platform.

While this doesn’t sound like it is easy to get running, it’s probably worth the effort. For anyone who wants to give it a shot, you can download the Quake Gamecube port and all the additional software from Peter Mackay’s Quake for the Gamecube Google Code Project Page. You might also want to check out Peter’s Blog for any updated news on this and other ports and software he is currently working on.

If anyone does get this running on their Gamecube, let me know how it works out. I currently don’t have a Datel SD Media Launcher to try this with, but I’d be curious to find out how well Quake runs on the Gamecube.

This has got to be one of the most elaborate Gamecube mods I have ever seen. And for Star Wars Fans, this is the perfect storage case for your Gamecube. As you can see in the picture, they have used the wavebird wireless controllers with this mod so the only time the AT-AT needs to be opened is when you are changing games. This definitely makes for a more interesting gaming setup than just the plain old cube.

And I thought case mods were only for computers.

This is terrible, terrible, terrible! Funny, but just awful. Some guy decides to play a prank on his little brother and secretly swaps his Gamecube for what appears to be a broken Gamecube. The kid tries to play a game on it and, of course, it doesn’t work. The older brother suggests that they take it over to a friends house who has a “lens cleaner” to try and fix it. While outside, he proceeds to smash the substituted Gamecube by throwing it up in the air in front of his little brother.

This is a must watch, if for no other reason than to see the sniveling little brother crying as what he thinks is his Gamecube is destroyed. It’s priceless!

I’ve seen some elegant console cases and stands before, but this one definitely takes the cake. For all of you looking for the ultimate Gamecube stand / case, check this out — it’s called the Gamecube Reliquary by it’s creator Cole Ranze.

This reliquary or table is made entirely out of ash wood with openings on the front for the Gamecube controller ports and memory card slots. The top of the reliquary flips up for access to load and unload games and power on and off the Gamecube. I was a little worried at first about the cooling issues associated with putting a Gamecube inside a wooden case, but as you can see in the picture there is even an opening on the side for the Gamecube fan.

Too bad this was just for a school project and not something that was going to be mass produced and available for purchase. Maybe Nintendo should consider a line of elegant stands for all it’s consoles …

With all of the hype surrounding the Wii (and the corresponding lack of attention for our beloved Gamecube), I noticed something that struck me as kind of odd. The Gamecube version of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess actually got a better rating than the Wii version from Gamespot! While it was extremely close (8.9 for the Gamecube, 8.8 for the Wii) it shows what a great console the Gamecube was — and still is.

Many people will say they probably expected this — there are many good reasons like:

Twilight Princess is really a Gamecube game that was ported to the Wii, so it doesn’t take advantage of the more powerful hardware.

All of the Wii specific control schemes were just “tacked on” at the end, so it actually plays better with a Gamecube controller.

Expectations were much higher for the Wii version of Twilight Princess — while it might be a great game on the Gamecube, it’s somewhat disappointing on the Wii.

While all of these things may be true to some extent, the fact Twilight Princess on the Gamecube is even close to the Wii version speaks volumes about how far ahead of it’s time this little purple console really was — it’s not every day that a 5 year old console can stand up favorably against a brand new, next gen console — especially one as good as the Wii.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for the Gamecube is the latest game in the Paper Mario series that began with the original Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64. In The Thousand-Year Door, our ultra thin plumber Mario must once again rescue Princess Peach. She has gone missing in the coastal town of Rogueport and it’s up to Mario to lead a search and rescue mission for our navigationally challenged Princess. To help Paper Mario and his team, here are some Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Cheats and Codes for the Nintendo Gamecube.

Princess Peach Takes a Shower!

Anytime you have control of Princess Peach, just go into the room next to your bedroom and walk up to the shower and press the A button on the controller when you see an exclamation mark. Princess Peach will then take a shower. When she comes out of the shower, she will have a different hairdoo.

Hidden Parlor Games

To play any of the Hidden Parlor Games, just perform the following Sidequests:

Plane Parlor Game: Complete the Try and Find Me Sidequest from Koopkook.

Boat Parlor Game: Complete the I Must Have That Book Sidequest from Toodles.

Tube Parlor Game: Complete the Important Thing Sidequest from Frankie

Paper Parlor Game: Complete the Save My Daddy Sidequest from Pine T. Jr.

Dress Paper Mario like Waluigi

As Paper Mario, collect both the W and L emblems and put them on — this will change the color of Mario’s clothes to purple, just like Waluigi’s clothes.

Turn Paper Mario into NES Mario

For those who miss the old NES days, you can change Paper Mario into his 8 bit NES counterpart. On Sublevel 2 of the X-Naut Base there is a room with a swinging grate. Stand under the grate and jump up into the air vent with an Ultra Jump. Next, press the R shoulder button on your controller and slide through the grate on the right after which you will fall into the changing room. Pull back the curtain to reveal Mario (and anyone else who is with him) as 8 bit NES Sprites. As soon as you leave the changing room you will all change back to the normal Paper Mario forms.

Have Ms. Mowz Join Your Party

A person named “???” will give you a trouble center quest to solve. To complete this quest, find the secret badge in Hooktails Castle. Bring this badge to the mouse on top of Zess T’s store and Ms. Mowz will join your party.
