Revolution May Trail Playstation 3
At a recent shareholders meeting, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata was asked about the release date of Nintendo’s next generation gaming system, Revolution, and concerns that it would be late. His Response:
“It won’t be extremely late, but it’s possible that it will trail a little.”
This is referring to Sony’s scheculed release of their next generation gaming system, Playstation 3, in Japan in the spring of 2006 and shortly after that in the US. Recently, Nintendo had stated that it would not trail the release of the Playstation 3.
When to release a new system in relation to competitors new systems has always been a tricky situation. The system that is released first has the chance to gain market share even before any competitors systems are available. On the other hand, the system that is released last has the benefit of newer, more advanced technology and the possibility to learn from some of the mistakes of their competitors.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see — the Revolution looks good, but if it trails the Playstation 3 by too much, Sony may own the market before the Revolution is even released.
