Starcraft: Ghost for the Gamecube Cancelled
In some not such good news for the Gamecube, Blizzard has announced that they have cancelled the Gamecube version of Starcraft: Ghost. The game, which has been called an action stealth type of game, is still being developed for the Playstation 2 and Xbox.
Blizzard said that the reason for the cancellation is the lack of an online service for the Gamecube such as XBox Live for the Xbox. Apparently, the development of the game has moved in a direction where the online component of the game is necessary for the gameplay and without it Blizzard felt there was no reason to continue development for the Gamecube. They also said that the unavailability of the Nintendo Broadband Adapter for the Gamecube in North America contributed to the decision.
All of this leads to one main question: Why has Nintendo abandoned online support for the Gamecube? It’s becoming apparent that every game console needs to have online support and without it, more and more of the games being developed that require an online component just won’t be made for the Gamecube. Plus, imagine what Nintendo could do with some of their own games if they added online gameplay. Animal Crossing, for one, just begs for an online service — while being able to travel to your freinds cities is great, it’s not always possible to physically bring your memory card to their house so your character can visit another town. But if we could travel to these other towns over the Internet, it would bring a whole new dimension to Animal Crossing — you could visit the towns of people you didn’t even know!
