Toy Test 2005 Loves Mario and the Gamecube
The NBC morning show Today has published their list of the top videogames for the 2005 holiday season from their 2005 Toy Test Series. While the top rated game was a Playstation 2 game (Burnout Revenge), games 2, 3, and 4 on the list are all Gamecube games that feature Mario.
The games were tested at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle where the Today Show setup Gamecube, Playstation, and Xbox consoles and players were brought in to play and rate the games. Over a two week period, they collected more than 11,000 ratings and used them to create the list.
The Gamecube games on the list are Super Mario Strikers, Mario Superstar Baseball, and Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix. There were two restrictions on the games that could be a part of the test — no shooting and stabbing on human characters on screen and nothing could be rated higher than teen.
I’m sure the restrictions on the violence in games had something to do with the absence of any Xbox games from the list. It also reinforces the myth that the Gamecube is only for kids. All you have to do is look at games like Resident Evil 4 and you can see this just isn’t true.
